SHA, in a consortium with the Public Affairs Center (PAC), Bengaluru, has been commissioned by GIZ to develop knowledge products and conduct capacity building programs on working with data, for urban officials from GIZ’s partner states in India. The modules developed focus on working with data that local and state level officials generate on urban development, enabling them to analyze and visualize their own data themselves. Over 2023 and 2024, SHA and PAC have developed the content for the program and delivered the 3-day program several times. Some of the key outputs include:

  • Development of a 3-module course/program on data analytics and visualization, with a focus on urban data;
  • Cases and practice materials with a focus on gender and climate change, as per the priorities of GIZ;
  • Development of a course manual to be published by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), along with detailed modules with teaching notes and case studies; and,
  • Delivery of several courses in GIZ’s partner states such as Kerala (municipal and urban officials as well as officers of the Kerala Administrative Service), Tamil Nadu, Assam and Telangana; and,
  • Design and delivery of a Training of Trainers (ToT) program for staff and faculty of various training and educational institutes in NIUA and GIZ’s partner states.

The key outcome has been to institutionalize the program on data analytics and visualization within state training institutes and academic institutions. Simultaneously, more than 150 urban officials have developed confidence to describe, analyze and visualize their own data, from a quantitative as well as spatial lens.
