Process change and architecture revamp of Out-patient Departments (OPDs) of 10 District Hospitals

Process change and architectural revamp for the Department of Medical Health and Family Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh.

I led an inter-disciplinary team of architects, medical professionals, bio-statisticians, product designers and management professionals to develop a research-based reconfiguration of the process flow of the OPDs of these large hospitals, followed by an architectural revamp based on the recommendations. The aim of the project was to enhance patient care and patient experience in these over-crowded public hospitals, under the Uttar Pradesh Health Systems Strengthening Project (UPHSSP), Government of Uttar Pradesh, funded by the World Bank (WB).

  • Development, design and pilot implementation of a ‘filter clinic’ system to streamline patient load on specialist doctors, that would enhance patient care level and the overall hospital experience
  • Design documentation, including procurement documentation for 10 hospitals
  • Capacity building/instructional video on management of hospital floors using filter clinics
  • Significant revenue stream, with potential for scaling up
A video explainer of the concept of ‘Filter Clinics’ – the video is made over a pilot demonstration of the concept in a Women and Child Hospital in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

Our ‘filter clinics’ concept is being implemented in several public hospitals in the state. We were also able to demonstrate and enable recognition of the value of evidence-based architectural design in order to solve complex problems. Extended the institution’s reach to the state of Uttar Pradesh and its portfolio towards public healthcare infrastructure design.
