Guidelines for the development of Primary Health Centres (PHC), Community Health Centres (CHC) and Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM) Sub-centres

Architectural guidelines for the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka.

I led the formulation of comprehensive guidelines for the development of public healthcare infrastructure in the state. The guidelines covered various agro-climatic and administrative regions of the state, and included adaptable architectural designs, room layouts, climate-responsive strategies and signage for various contexts across the state.

  • Several hundred healthcare facilities commissioned on the basis of the guidelines
  • A rich database of current practices in the design and development of public healthcare infrastructure, with focused inquiry on climate-responsiveness and basic services
  • Significant revenue stream for the institution, with potential for scaling up to national or global-regional level

The guidelines led to enhanced awareness of climate-responsive design of public healthcare infrastructure in the state machinery. The template-based approach was able to ease procurement through articulation of modular enhancements for climate-responsiveness as well as facility expansion and transformation.
